Moderated by United Way of Greater Atlanta’s Yvette Cook, the panel included Craig Lesser, founder of Pendleton Group and former Georgia commissioner of economic development.

AdvancED is the parent of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools’ Council on Accreditation and School Improvement. SACS several years ago forced Clayton County’s public schools and the Atlanta Public Schools high schools to shape up, or risk losing their accreditation. Then last December, it placed DeKalb County’s schools on probation through 2013.

The former commissioner of the Georgia Department of Economic Devel-opment (GDEcD), Lesser has joined the private sector as a consultant, providing economic development and government affairs advice and strategy. While at GDEcD (2004-2007), new investment and expansion announcements in Georgia totaled more than $8 billion and created more than 40,000 new jobs. Lesser also chairs the board of the World Chamber of Commerce.

A few times a week, I have the privilege of working from a location where I have a great view of Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on a clear day. I can see the whole expanse of it and – if I give myself enough time to pay attention for a moment – observe a few planes land or take off.
